Alonso Cuartero Mondono
DC9 - EMPA
“Alonso holds a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Technologies Engineering and a Master’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. His academic and professional trajectory is marked by extensive and diverse experience. He contributed to the aerospace industry by studying composite solid rocket propellants and advanced materials for orbital rockets, including the combustion chambers of reusable liquid engines. As part of his Master’s thesis, Alonso conducted a detailed analysis of high-strength steels for nuclear fusion applications at CERN, cultivating a strong interest in materials subjected to extreme environments. He actively integrates his expertise in materials science with complementary disciplines, such as mechanical engineering and data analysis, leveraging tools like machine learning to design novel high-entropy alloys. Currently, Alonso is pursuing a PhD at EMPA/ETH Zurich within the MetacMed project, where his research is dedicated to the development of 3D chiral metamaterials for wave guiding and confinement.
